Marathon has been making watches in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland since 1939. They're one of the few remaining manufacturers with an active contract supplying timepieces to NATO military forces, and that relationship shapes everything about how they build watches. These aren't watches designed to look military, they're designed to meet military specification, then sold to civilians. The SAR series was developed to Canadian Government requirements for use in professional search and rescue operations and has been in continuous service with elite units of both the Canadian and U.S. militaries since the early 1990s. If provenance and genuine military pedigree matter to you, Marathon is the real thing.

The GSAR is Marathon's flagship diver and the most decorated watch in their lineup. It's sought after by working military personnel and serious collectors in equal measure. The 41mm 316L stainless steel case wears a brushed finish and houses a Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement with Incabloc shock absorption, 26 jewels, and a date display. The unidirectional 60-minute bezel is built for dive timing. Water resistance is 30 ATM — genuinely dive-rated, not just splash-proof marketing. The sapphire crystal is paired with both tritium gas tubes and MaraGlo lume on the dial, meaning this watch is visible in low light whether you've charged it or not. The screw-down crown keeps everything sealed. It ships with a 3-piece rubber strap kit, giving you flexibility right out of the box. Every GSAR is individually numbered.

Our Take

The GSAR is the watch we debated the longest before deciding to carry it. Two thousand dollars is a number that requires a real answer, and here it is: this is one of the few watches at any price where the spec sheet, the history, and the actual build quality all point in the same direction. The SW200-1 is a movement we trust. The 30 ATM rating is serious dive capability. The tritium means you're never fumbling in the dark waiting for lume to charge. And the military lineage isn't branding, as these watches are issued to people whose lives depend on their gear working. If you're looking for a diver that can do the job and still look right on a Friday night, the GSAR makes a strong case for itself. This is the highest-priced watch we carry, and we're comfortable with that.

Who This Watch Is For

  • The serious diver. 30 ATM water resistance, a unidirectional dive bezel, and tritium illumination that works at depth without charging — this is a functional dive tool, not a dive-styled dress watch.
  • The automatic purist who wants military provenance. The SW200-1 is one of the most reliable Swiss automatic movements available, and the GSAR's active military service record puts it in a category almost no other watch can claim.
  • The collector who buys once and keeps it. Individually numbered, Swiss made, built to a government specification — the GSAR holds its value and its relevance in a way that trend-driven watches don't.
  • The buyer ready to step up from a good watch to a great one. If you've owned solid watches in the $300–$700 range and you're ready to see what the top of the tool watch category actually feels like, this is the answer.
