Marathon has been making watches in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland since 1939. They're one of the few remaining manufacturers with an active contract supplying timepieces to NATO military forces, and that relationship shapes everything about how they build watches. These aren't watches designed to look military, they're designed to meet military specification, then sold to civilians. The SAR series was developed to Canadian Government requirements for use in professional search and rescue operations and has been in continuous service with elite units of both the Canadian and U.S. militaries since the early 1990s. The MSAR Auto is the 36mm iteration of Marathon's SAR dive series. It's the same specification as the 41mm GSAR, compressed into a case that fits tighter on the wrist and disappears more completely under a wetsuit sleeve, a technical jacket, or a dress shirt cuff. Every functional specification carries over unchanged: Sellita SW200-1 automatic with Incabloc shock absorption, 30 ATM water resistance, tritium gas tubes plus MaraGlo on every hour marker and both hands, unidirectional 60-minute bezel, sapphire crystal, and screw-down crown. Our Take

The MSAR and the GSAR answer the same question with a different number. If the GSAR's 41mm case is the right size for your wrist, buy the GSAR. If you want identical capability in a case that wears closer to a 36mm dress watch than a dive instrument, the MSAR is the answer, and the capability is genuinely identical. Thirty ATM water resistance, tritium that glows without charging, SW200-1 reliability, Swiss made construction, and an active NSN in the US military procurement system. The smaller case also means a 43.5mm lug-to-lug that will fit wrists the GSAR simply can't accommodate comfortably. At $1,400 the MSAR is the same investment as the GSAR for a watch that does everything the GSAR does, just on a smaller stage.

Who This Watch Is For

• The smaller wrist who refuses to compromise on specification. 43.5mm lug-to-lug and 36mm diameter is serious dive watch capability in proportions that most serious dive watches don't offer. The MSAR doesn't ask you to choose between fit and function.
• The diver who works in tight gear. A 36mm case clears a wetsuit sleeve and a technical jacket cuff where a 41mm won't. If the watch needs to go under something, the MSAR is the more practical choice.
• The collector who wants the full SAR family. The MSAR and GSAR share every functional specification. If you own the GSAR and want its smaller sibling, or you want to start with the MSAR and add the GSAR later, the two watches are a logical pair.
• The buyer who understands what an NSN means. A National Stock Number is a procurement designation in the US and NATO supply systems. The MSAR carrying one means it has passed the evaluation and testing process to be issued to military personnel. That's a different kind of quality assurance than a marketing claim.
