Our Take
The flieger category is crowded, and a lot of what fills it is either oversize or overpriced. The Augsburg 39 sidesteps both problems. At 39mm it's one of the few pilot watches that actually wears like a watch rather than a statement piece. The proportions are right, the lug-to-lug is manageable, and it sits close to the wrist in a way that makes it genuinely comfortable all day. The Type A dial is exactly what it should be: black, clean, legible, and completely uncluttered. Laco has been making these since 1925 and it shows. The riveted leather strap is the finishing touch that a lot of competitors cheap out on at this price. This is a watch that understands what it is and doesn't try to be anything else.
Who This Watch Is For
- Buyers who've been drawn to pilot watches but found most of them too large to actually wear, 39mm is the sweet spot, and very few fliegers get there without compromising the proportions
- Anyone who wants genuine German watchmaking heritage without paying Glashutte prices. Laco has been doing this since before most Swiss brands existed
- Collectors who appreciate that the Type A dial format is historically accurate, not just aesthetically inspired
- People comparing this to the Augsburg 42: if you're on the fence about size, go 39 as you can always wish a watch were bigger, but you'll know immediately if it's too large
