Islander is the in-house watch brand from Long Island Watch, one of the most respected independent watch retailers in the country. Launched in 2019, Islander builds watches for enthusiasts who know what they want. It's solid movements, sapphire crystals, purposeful design, all without paying luxury prices to get there. The Astoria is a different direction for Islander, and a deliberate one.
The Astoria is Islander's first true dress watch, and it earns that designation without compromise. The tonneau case, which is French for barrel and a shape with roots in early 20th century watchmaking, measures 34mm across and 37mm tall with a 44.2mm lug-to-lug and just 9.2mm of thickness. It disappears under a shirt cuff. The pale blue dial is divided into two zones: outer radial striations that catch light as the wrist moves, and an inner concentric eye texture that gives the dial genuine visual depth. Roman numerals mark the four cardinal positions. Polished cathedral-style hands sweep the dial at 28,800 bph, about eight ticks per second, smooth enough to read without a jerk. No date window breaks the symmetry. Both the dial and hands carry SuperLuminova. It's an unusual choice for a dress watch and a practical one. The movement underneath is the Miyota 9039, a no-date hi-beat automatic that handwinds and hacks. Turn it over and the solid caseback carries an engraving of Steinway Manor, the landmark Astoria, Queens building connected to the Steinway piano family, which is the same namesake as the neighborhood and this watch. Water resistance is 50 meters. The leather-backed fabric strap uses quick-release spring pins and tapers from 18mm to 16mm at the prong buckle.
