Islander is the in-house watch brand from Long Island Watch, one of the most respected independent watch retailers in the country. Launched in 2019, Islander builds watches for enthusiasts who know what they want. It's solid movements, sapphire crystals, purposeful design, all without paying luxury prices to get there. Every model is designed with the watch community in mind, which is why Islander has built a loyal following faster than almost any microbrand in recent memory. The Astoria is a different direction for Islander, and a deliberate one.
The Astoria in ebony black is the more formal proposition of the three Astoria variants. Where the pale blue makes a statement, the black disappears into any dress code and lets the case and hands do the talking. The tonneau case measures 34mm across and 37mm tall with a 44.2mm lug-to-lug and 9.2mm of thickness. It sits flat under a shirt cuff without resistance. The ebony black dial carries the same two-zone texture as the rest of the lineup with outer radial striations and inner concentric eye pattern, but in black the effect reads as depth rather than color. Light catches the striations as the wrist moves while the center pulls the eye inward. Roman numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9. Polished cathedral hands sweep at 28,800 bph, or eight beats per second, continuous motion. SuperLuminova on both dial and hands handles low-light legibility without announcing itself in daylight. No date. The movement is the Miyota 9039, a no-date hi-beat automatic that handwinds and hacks. The solid caseback carries an engraving of Steinway Manor in Astoria, Queens. Water resistance is 50 meters. The leather-backed fabric strap uses quick-release spring pins and tapers from 18mm to 16mm at the prong buckle.

Our Take
If the pale blue Astoria is the watch that gets noticed, the ebony black is the one that gets worn more. Black dials on dress watches are as close to a universal answer as the category offers because they work with navy, charcoal, grey, black, and brown in a way that colored dials simply don't. The two-zone texture keeps the dial from reading flat, which is the risk any solid black dial runs, and the polished cathedral hands provide enough contrast to read clearly. Same Miyota 9039 underneath, same case, same Steinway Manor caseback, the only variable is the dial, and in black it's the more versatile choice. If you own one suit and need one watch, this is the one.
Who This Watch Is For
- The formal occasion buyer who wants one answer. Ebony black works with every dress code from business casual to black tie. You won't second guess this choice getting dressed.
- The minimalist. No date, no color, no complications. The ISL-261 is a clean dial with a good movement in a well-proportioned case. That's the whole pitch, nothing else.
- The smaller wrist who's been underserved by the market. 34mm, 9.2mm thick, 44.2mm lug-to-lug. It's genuinely sized for a smaller wrist without being marketed as a women's watch or a vintage piece.
