The SKX series watch line from Seiko is a cult classic that has been discontinued. But looking through the grey market, we regularly see multiple offers on used versions with price points of $200 all the way up to $350 in some situations. Don’t get us wrong, the SKX is a great watch, but over time, technology has offered us some other options at the historical watches pricepoint.
1. Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster Dive Watch - This watch is a great alternative to the Seiko SKX007 for bigger wrists. This w
atch has a 44mm case and runs on light. That’s right, sunlight-a solar quartz movement, to be exact. With a highly legible dial and a no-nonsense build, this watch is a steal at the MSRP of $300, which is right around the price of a used SKX007.
2. Orient Mako II Automatic Dive Watch - The Orient Mako II is another great alternative to the Seiko SKX007. This watch has a more modern look and feel, with a larger case size and more legible markings. Additionally, the Orient Mako II has a higher water resistance rating and a fairly accurate movement, making it a great choice for those who want a more reliable watch for diving and other water sports. The Mako can be found on the grey market for around $175.
3. Tissot Seastar 1000 Automatic Dive Watch - The Tissot Seastar 1000 is a great alternative to the Seiko SKX007 because it offers a more stylish look and feel, with a sleek, sporty design and a higher water resistance rating. The rubber strap option is something that shouldn’t be scoffed at. Additionally, the Tissot Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80 is powered by an automatic movement that has a power reserve of 80 hours!
4. Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba - The Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba is another great alternative to the Seiko SKX007, offering a classic, timeless design, a higher water resistance rating and automatic movement. Another watch with a 80 hour power reserve, it will last quite a bit longer than the SKX also, at a price point on the grey market between $500 and $700.
5. Longines HydroConquest Automatic Dive Watch – While it is admittedly more expensive, the Longines HydroConquest is a great alternative to the Seiko SKX007, offering a more elegant and refined look and feel. This is a diver that can grow with you as your collection transitions into higher end pieces. It comes with a higherd water resistance rating and a more accurate swiss movement. Additionally, the Longines HydroConquest is powered by either an automatic or quartz movement, making it a great choice for those who want a watch that's easy to use and maintain, with a touch of luxury. You can find HydroConquests on the grey market for anywhere between $650-$1000 depending on which movement you choose.
So there you have it, five options to take a look at instead of the SKX. We will continue to rotate our SKX007 through the collection as we think it’s one of the best pieces that has been built for the money, during the time it was introduced. However, we would love to see folks take a look at some what else the watch community has brought to us over time. Cheers!
